A few updates

Going on my third week at UAkron. Folks keep asking if I like it better than Kent, but overall I'd say it's too soon to tell. On the one hand, I've got a nicer room, and the quality of the classes seems about the same; on the other, the wi-fi on campus sucks (bye, Netflix), some of the facilities are a little old, and most of the classrooms have those tiny elementary school-style desks that are not exactly easy for a man of my dimensions to squeeze himself into. Between that and the 19-yr-olds giving me sideways looks like the too-old-for-college guy I am... let's just say it's been an adjustment.

In other news: I've reached out to a few MFA programs, and gotten promising responses from Rutgers in New Jersey and Rosemont College in Philadelphia. Not fully funded, sadly - fully funded programs offer free tuition and a stipend to every student admitted - but they seem very open to genre writing, which not all programs are. I plan on scheduling a couple of campus tours once I get my driving situation worked out - road trip, anyone? (Rutgers is right across the river from Philadelphia, so the schools are actually quite close together).

Spoke to a lady in the Communication department at UA about setting up an internship at the Akron Beacon Journal this summer. So we'll see if that works out. Had an interview with a non-profit group downtown, so I may be volunteering with them, doing public relations, writing blog posts, working with social media and whatnot. Doesn't pay, but I figure it'll be fun, it'll give me something to do, and it ought to look good on a resume once I start applying for professional positions.

Some interesting stuff coming down the pike...
